What is TCM Tuina Massage?
Tuina (推拿), meaning “push and grasp,” is a therapeutic massage technique central to Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years. Developed alongside acupuncture and herbal medicine, Tuina works by manipulating the body’s meridian system (经络) and stimulating specific acupressure points to unblock Qi or your body’s vital energy.
Unlike Western massage, which primarily focuses on muscle relaxation, TCM Tuina addresses the root cause of imbalance by:
How TCM Tuina Massage Works
Meridian System & Qi Flow
Traditional Chinese Medicine is built on the principle that health depends on unobstructed vital energy (Qi) flow through meridian pathways. TCM Tuina uses targeted pressure and movement techniques on these meridian systems as part of complementary wellness care.

Root Cause vs. Symptom-Focused Approach
TCM Tuina aims to address underlying patterns and support the body’s natural healing response, rather than focusing solely on immediate symptom relief. This approach may support recovery through targeted technique application.
Enhanced Circulation & Recovery Support
Tuina’s techniques are designed to support improved blood and lymphatic circulation. Enhanced circulation may help deliver oxygen and nutrients to treated areas and support the body’s natural inflammatory response.
This physiological response may complement recovery for athletes, chronic pain cases, and general wellness. Results vary based on individual factors and treatment protocols.

5 Core TCM Tuina Techniques & Their Applications
Tuina draws on a structured set of hand techniques applied along meridian pathways and to specific acupoints. At Nuo ER, our practitioners apply the following five core methods in accordance with traditional TCM principles, tailored to your individual presentation and tolerance.
Pushing (推 – Tui)
Therapists apply controlled, linear pressure with the palm, thumb, or fingers along traditional meridian pathways. Traditionally used to support circulation along the channels and address surface-level tension.
May support:
Kneading (揉 – Róu)
Involves steady, circular pressure delivered through the palm, thumb, or heel of the hand into soft tissue and muscle layers. Traditionally used to address areas of stagnation and soften regions of accumulated tightness.
May Support:
Rolling (滚 – Gǔn)
Using the back of the hand, knuckles, or ulnar border, the therapist performs a rhythmic rolling motion across larger muscle groups. This is traditionally applied to relax the body, warm the meridians, and address deeper, longer-standing areas of stiffness.
May Support:
Grasping (拿 – Ná)
Involves pinching, lifting, and gently squeezing muscles or tendons between the thumb and fingers in a rhythmic motion. This is traditionally applied to the neck, shoulders, and limbs to release tension in tight tendons and muscle bellies.
May support:
Pressing (按 – Àn)
Uses steady, stationary, vertical pressure applied to specific acupoints or trigger points using the thumb, palm, or elbow. Is a targeted technique traditionally used to encourage Qi flow and address localised areas of held tension.

Benefits of TCM Tuina & Body Massage
Conditions Addressed with TCM Tuina
Tuina massage is offered as complementary support for a range of musculoskeletal and lifestyle-related concerns. While each session is relaxing on its own, the techniques are also tailored to address specific patterns commonly seen in our Singapore clinic.
Chronic Pain Support
Common Issues: Lower back stiffness, persistent muscle tension, recurring joint discomfort, and sedentary aches
Our practitioners apply rolling (Gun) and pressing (An) along affected meridian pathways to address areas where stagnation and tension have built up over time. The aim is to ease soft-tissue tightness and support the body’s natural circulation in the surrounding region.
Possible Supportive Benefits:
Weight Management Support
Common Issues: Sluggish metabolism, abdominal bloating, post-meal heaviness, slow digestion
Abdominal Tuina techniques focus on the Spleen and Stomach meridians, traditionally associated with how the body processes food and eliminates waste. This makes Tuina a complement to your existing diet and movement routine — not a replacement for either.
Possible Supportive Benefits:
Stress Management Support
Common Issues: Mental fatigue, tense shoulders, restless sleep, stress-related headaches
We use slower, rhythmic techniques along the upper back, neck, and head to ease the muscular bracing that builds up during high-demand periods. The aim is to help the nervous system shift out of a constantly “on” state.
Possible Supportive Benefits:
Office Syndrome & Desk Pain
Common Issues: “Tech neck,” rounded shoulders, mid-back tightness, wrist and forearm fatigue
Long hours at a desk leave the upper trapezius, levator scapulae, and forearm fascia in a shortened, locked position. Our therapists work these specific layers to release the holding patterns that desk work creates.
Possible Supportive Benefits:
Post-Injury Recovery Support
Common Issues: Residual stiffness after a sprain or strain, lingering swelling, reduced flexibility in healing tissue
Once the acute phase has passed, gentle pushing (Tui) and kneading (Rou) help encourage local circulation and lymphatic movement around recovering tissue. We always assess suitability before applying any technique to a healing area.
Possible Supportive Benefits:
Headache & Migraine Discomfort Support
Common Issues: Tension-type headaches, eye strain, scalp tightness, stress-triggered head discomfort
Targeted acupressure on the neck, scalp, and shoulder acupoints helps ease the muscular tightness that often accompanies head discomfort. We tailor the pressure based on your sensitivity on the day.
Possible Supportive Benefits:
Women’s Wellness
Common Issues: Menstrual cramps, lower back heaviness during cycle, mood shifts, PMS-related tension
We apply gentle Tuina techniques to the lower abdomen, sacrum, and lower back to ease the muscular tightness that often accompanies the menstrual cycle. Sessions are scheduled with your cycle in mind.
Possible Supportive Benefits:
Digestive Comfort Support
Common Issues: Sluggish digestion, occasional bloating, irregularity, post-meal discomfort
Slow circular kneading (Rou) on the abdomen, combined with pressure along the Spleen and Stomach meridians, is traditionally used to encourage gentle gut motility. This is a calming, non-invasive complement to your daily habits.
